Is It Just a Cold or Something More? When to Schedule a Sick Visit for Your Child

Every parent knows the feeling of watching a child sniffle and cough. You wonder if it is just a simple cold. Or is it something more serious?

Dr. Douglas R. Grogan and our team at Bethel Family Medicine in Brockton, Massachusetts, provide compassionate pediatric care for every child. We want to help you make the right choice for your child's health. Knowing when to schedule sick visits can give you peace of mind.

Age matters when your child has a fever

There is no single rule for when to call the doctor. A child's age affects how we interpret their symptoms.

For example, a fever in an older child is often a normal sign of a cold. In a young infant, however, a fever is a potential emergency.

A 2025 study in Pediatrics evaluated febrile infants aged 61 to 90 days old who tested positive for a respiratory virus. The researchers found that concurrent bacterial urinary tract infections ranged from 2.2% to 5.2%.

This means a baby can have a serious bacterial infection even with a confirmed cold virus.

Our team is always ready to evaluate your infant. We provide safe. quick, thorough exams to rule out serious complications.

Trusting your parental intuition

As a parent, you know your child best. Your gut feeling is a powerful tool for keeping them safe.

In a 2026 study of 2,375 children in JAMA Network Open, parental worry was highly sensitive for identifying severe illness. However, it also had low specificity.

This means your worry is excellent at catching serious issues, but it can also cause you to schedule unnecessary visits for simple colds.

It’s stressful when your child is sick, and you aren’t sure what’s wrong. We listen to your concerns and provide clear guidance so that you can make informed decisions about their care.

Keeping your child comfortable at home

Many childhood colds can be managed safely at home with simple steps.

Using a cool-mist humidifier in your child's room can make their breathing more comfortable. The moisture helps loosen thick mucus and soothe irritated airways. Be sure to clean the humidifier thoroughly every day to prevent mold and bacterial growth inside the machine.

Always avoid warm-mist humidifiers or steam vaporizers. These devices pose a severe risk of burns to curious children.

If your child's symptoms do not improve, our family medicine practice is here to help.

You do not have to guess about your child's health. If you’re worried, we’re here to support you. Please contact our team today to schedule a visit at our Brockton, Massachusetts office.
